Bugs are fascinating.

This is a new discovery.

I didn’t grow up, like some kids, beguiled by insects. I was enthralled with dinosaurs, faeries, robots, and all things Star Wars. Bugs were fine, but a lot of them seemed to enjoy stinging me and I wasn’t down for that.

Japan exposed me to a vaster variety of six-legged creepy crawlies than I could have ever imagined. My daughter will gleefully plop them into my hand without warning or explanation: Dango-mushi (the ever-present pillbug), rhinoceros beetles, grasshoppers shaped like miniature mechs, she adores them all. Except for bees. She doesn’t love the buzzing stingers.

It’s really cool to be invited to join the World of Insects •昆虫展 at Arts Rush Gallery in Daikanyama, Tokyo. Six crazy-talented artists (yes, I’m including myself!) have dug through the hordes of Insecta to create our own kaleidoscopes of butterflies and swarms and clouds of bugs. It’s gonna be a lot of fun, so if you’re in the area, drop on by the gallery!
